Quinta Brunson reacts to Jimmy Kimmel’s Emmy win

Jimmy Kimmel might have thought playing dead at the 74th Emmy Awards was funny, but Twitter isn’t laughing.

On Monday, the late-night television host posed as a corpse, dragged onto the stage by actor Will Arnett, to present the Emmy Award for comedy writing. But when creator and “Abbott Elementary” star Quinta Brunson stepped up to accept her first Emmy, she had some unexpected and unwanted company at her feet.

Brunson played along and said, “Jimmy, wake up, I won.” She even asked him to hold her phone, and he complied with a thumbs up, but then fell to the ground. Brunson thanked her at the end of her speech.

Speaking to the press backstage, Brunson explained the situation, still unaware that the moment had gone viral.

“I felt like the part didn’t bother me as much,” he said. “I don’t know what the internet thinks!

“Honestly, Jimmy gave me my first night spot and he was one of the first people to see ‘Abbott,’ and he sent me an Instagram message that he saw this sitcom and thought it was one of the best sitcoms of all time and he was so excited that it was going to be on ABC,” she added.

“So I think at the time, I was really happy that it was Jimmy that was there! I’m a big fan of Will Arnett, so he was absorbed in the moment.”

Brunson said he could get revenge on Kimmel for the Emmy sham.

“I’m going to be on his show on Wednesday, so I might as well punch him in the face,” he joked. “I don’t know. We’ll see what happens.”

Twitter, however, was less forgiving of Kimmel’s antics.

“Jimmy Kimmel lying on the ground while Quinta has his moment is extremely irritating,” tweeted editor Connor Perrett.

Another user said that Brunson “deserved better than” having Kimmel’s “dead” body at his feet. Another tweeted that Kimmel, who has hosted the Emmys multiple times, most recently in 2020, “deserves” the online reaction it provoked.

“Jimmy Kimmel should have left the stage during Quinta’s speech,” journalist Philip Lewis tweeted. “Highly disrespectful.”

Another Twitter user noted that Kimmel’s actions will have lasting consequences.

“Jimmy Kimmel owes Quinta an apology, but the wrong part is every picture of her accepting her award has her butt on it,” he said. theologian and author Candice Marie Benbow tweeted.
