Teen ‘House Of The Dragon’ Star Says She Felt ‘Scared’ About Filming A Sex Scene With Her Older Co-star

HBO’s “House of the Dragon” star Emily Carey recently opened up about her trepidation about filming uncomfortable sex scenes for the show.

Carey, who plays Alicent Hightower on the fantasy series, appeared on Sunday night’s episode with her significantly older husband, King Viserys (played by Paddy Considine), in several intimate scenes.

The first scene shows her helping to bathe him in a tub. In the second, she appears visibly unsettled as she is lying under him on the bed as they have sex.

Speaking about the nearly 30-year age difference, Carey shared that she was “still 17” at the time of casting and 18 when filming began.

In a recent interview with Newsweek, she revealed that she felt “scared” about doing the scenes with Considine, who was then 47 years old.

“We have an intimacy coordinator who was amazing,” Carey told the outlet. “Again, I was still 17 years old, the first scene I read from the show was my sex scene and my intimacy scenes, which includes the scene where I’m bathing the king; anything that felt intimate was considered an intimate scene, which I thought. it was great.”

On film and television sets, “intimacy coordinators” are responsible for ensuring the well-being of actors involved in on-screen sex scenes.

“But it scared me, because at that time I didn’t know Paddy yet, I didn’t know how cheerful he was and how easy it was going to be. [the scene]and all I saw was, you know, a 47-year-old man and myself, I was a little worried,” she continued.

“And to have that release from the intimacy coordinator, to be able to talk about everything and not be rejected, or not feel awkward, or not feel like, ‘Oh, this isn’t your job.’ I don’t want him to feel uncomfortable, but can I ask him…? It was never any of that, it was just that open dialogue,” Carey added.

The 19-year-old shared that despite her apprehension, the ordeal was “a lot easier than I thought it would be.”

Carey, who also revealed she had never seen the show’s precursor “Game of Thrones” before she was cast, said she was “nervous” about the “violent sex” themes when she finally saw the show in pre-production. .

“I have never seen ‘Game of Thrones’ before, so in the pre-production period I sat down to try to see [it] and of course the first season, even the first episode of ‘Thrones,’ there is a lot of violence against women,” she said. “There is a lot of violent sex and it made me nervous. I was like, ‘Oh God, what am I going to have to do on this show?’”

Carey isn’t the only cast member to be surprised by the abundance of steamy scenes.

In August, matt smithwho plays Prince Daemon Targaryen in the series, told Britain’s Rolling Stone that he thinks the sheer number of sex scenes his character appears in is “a bit too much, if you ask me.”

The show’s prequel, “Game of Thrones,” was also found under fire for his bawdy nudity in recent years.

Late last year, actress Gemma Whelan, who played Yara Greyjoy on the series, called the show’s sex scenes “a frantic mess” in an interview with The Guardian.
